How to use Toshiba Function (Fn) keys

There is a row of Function keys at the top of the keyboard on every Toshiba notebook. These give you quick access to some useful functions. To activate them, just press the FN button on the keyboard together with the function key to activate the following commands.

Esc This function mutes the sound from your speakers – on/off button.
F1 Use this to lock your computer so it can only be used after you reactivate it with your password.
F2 This displays power saver options, enabling you to reduce screen brightness or switch off your optical drive to extend battery life.
F3 Activates a low power mode called Instant Standby. In this mode, your notebook remains on, but all the main components are put into a sleep state. The only thing active is the memory so that you can resume work quickly. In Instant Standby, the battery will last approximately 30 hours.
F4 This activates a mode called Hibernation. In this mode, your notebook's battery can last up to 26 days. Yet you can still restart relatively quickly all of the contents of your RAM are copied to the hard drive, so you can restart your previous session without interruption.
F5 The display/presentation button. This lets you cycle through your display options and connect easily to an external projector or screen, saving time and hassle.
F6 Reduces the brightness of the backlights that illuminate your screen. This is one of the biggest users of power in your notebook, so it can help extend battery life.
F7 Increases brightness. Handy when you're in a bright room or outside.
F8 Wireless on/off. This lets you cycle between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes. It can also help you extend battery life by switching off power to the Wi-Fi antennas.
F9 Mousepad on/off. Handy if you're a touch typist and you don't want the mousepad active while you're using the keyboard.
F10 Arrow pad on/off. Handy if you're a touch typist and you don't want the arrow pad active while you're using the keyboard.
F11 Number pad on/off. Handy if you're a touch typist and you don't want the number pad active while you're using the keyboard.
F12 Zoom control. This function uses the 3D processing power of the video chip to let you zoom in on the screen – useful for reading smaller text, or looking at the detail in a diagram or photo.
F Space Instant resolution change. By pressing Fn Space over and over again, you will cycle your screen resolution from 1400 x 1050 to 1024 x 768 to 800 x 600 and then back to 1400 x 1050. This is very useful when you're outputting your screen display to an external monitor with a different resolution, By cycling through the resolution settings, you can find the one that looks best on the external screen.
